We provide a wide variety of services such as Internet, Usenet, email, and archives with popular programs for all sorts of computers. We are the first public access Internet site in Westchester. As we add (or plan to add) new services, the information contained in this file will change. To get a new copy of it, finger 'info@cloud9.net', or send email to 'info@cloud9.net'. How to reach us ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are located in Westchester county, you can call us for the cost of a local call. You can also telnet here via the Internet (cloud9.net or 198.202.211.2). We currently have 5 lines, and this is sure to expand as the system grows. We plan on having enough lines for enough users so you will never get a busy signal. We also plan on offering local access in Upper Westchester, and also Rockland county. Future plans also may include Fairfield County (203). Using the system ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can use your account here on Cloud 9 either via our easy to use menu system, or via a Unix shell. People who don't know Unix, or are new to computing to general, should find the menu easy to use. Unix users have their choice of ksh, csh, tcsh, zsh, or bash. There are also many popular UNIX utilities, and most of the GNU utilities available including gcc, and emacs. The Internet ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cloud 9 Internet is a full Internet site, directly connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via a 56k leased line. This means that your email will be delivered instantly, your Usnet news articles propogated instantly, and you will have the ability to ftp, telnet, and gopher to any other Internet site anywhere in the world. We will move to a faster connection (a T1) when we have enough demand for one. What's down the road ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are constantly planning upgrades to we can better serve you. Here are a few things we are planning by the summer of 1994: - A faster connection to the Internet (a T1) - X Window based services - SLIP/PPP - ISDN services - Local access in other areas Prices ~~~~~~ Our pricing is as follows: Full Internet access - $150/year in advance, or $45/quarter This includes: - email account (user@cloud9.net) - Usenet news - Access to FTP, telnet, gopher, archie, wais, www, etc. - Your choice of Unix shell or our menu system - 2MB of storage space Usenet Only access - $75/year in advance, $22/quarter This includes: - email account (user@cloud9.net) - Usenet news - Your choice of Unix shell or our menu system - 1MB of storage space All accounts have access to high speed lines. There are no high speed surcharges, no hourly charges, and no extra usage charges. All you pay is the quarterly or yearly fee. You do not get any of the Internet services such as ftp, telnet, etc. with a Usenet account -- you need to purchase an Internet account for these services. Both accounts are for your personal use only. This means that you as an individual can use the account, and if you are a one-person company you can also use this account. You may not share this account with multiple people. Corporate accounts are available for companies who want Internet access for more than one person, but do not have the desire to maintain a IP connection. If you are interested in UUCP feeds, please email staff@cloud9.net. Paying for it all ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Currently, the only method of payment is check/money order, but we will be accepting MasterCard/Visa/Discover/American Express shortly. However you choose to pay, you will receive a paper invoice mailed to you. Signing up ~~~~~~~~~~ If you like everything so far, you might now want to give us a call. Our main modem number is (914)682-0384. This rings down to other lines, so this is the only number you need. When you connect, login as 'new', with no password. Once we verify your account, you will receive a trial membership, good for a week. In that time, you will have a Usenet Only account, and will be able to browse the system to see if you like it. If you are not satisfied with the system, all you do is let your account run out -- you don't owe us anything. If you want to get a hold of us via voice first, we can be reached at (914)682-0626. If you want to fax us, you can do that at (914)682-0506. You can also send us email at staff@cloud9.net. Whichever method you choose, we will usually get back to you that day.
